What I'm passionate about....

I'm writing in response to writing prompts provided by http://www.mamakatslosinit.com/ . I'm going to write about one of my passions. NOT the kind of passion that makes me blush.
I'm passionate about food. Real food. You know the kind that doesn't come from a box or microwave package. Most of it doesn't come with a label at ball. The food that still resembles it's natural state. A piece of raw fruit with the skin still on. A vegetable that needs peeling and chopping. Meat that looks like, well meat.
This passion stems from a conversation  with my daughter when she asked, "What kind of chicken nuggets do you like mom?" A resounding none of the above. Chicken nuggets are formed from all the parts of the chicken that you would never consider consuming. Then they are ground up and "formed". Ew! Ew! Ew!
And I'm frequently outspoken about the evils of high fructose corn syrup. It's a cheap and sneaky filler. YOu can find it in everything, even things that aren't supposed to be sweet..., like horseradish sauce. Why am I not a fan? You can mirror the rise in obesity in our nation with the increased use of HFCS. It is not totally to blame, we need to eat less and move more but that is a different blog. HFCS may come from corn but it's chemically altered until your body can't recognize it as food.
I should now mention (rant) about Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG). It's considered an excito-toxin. Really? They labe it a "toxin" and we still freely eat it? And nobody dares ask me my opinion of hot dogs or cold cuts.
That being said, I freely admit to a current addiction to both chocolate and pepsi so I'm not a total food freak.
THis is a picture of a recent meal I had in Peru. This is INCA KOLA. It's a local beverage. It tastes like cream soda but it has been "hopped" up on caffeine. Saving grace? It's made with sugar and not HFCS.

And the non-descript meat? Although Guinea Pig is a local favorite, they told me this was Goat. I'm not sure, is that better? So what are you passionate about? More later about heroes aboard the USNS Comfort.

Lisa, I have a passion for fresh fruit and vegetables too. I'm less passionate about meat. Growing up on a farm where we 'grew our own' turned me into a semi-vegetarian. You can't raise an animal, give it a name and later eat it for dinner (at least not with good conscience).

I've got fresh lettuce, spinach and cilantro growing the garden. If you'd like salad for dinner, give me a call.

I loved the Inca Cola. Probably because it wasn't "Diet Anything". Just good sugary cola... ahhhhh
